Convergence
The author describes convergence culture as “describ[ing] technological, industrial, cultural, and social changes in the ways media circulates within our culture.” The circulation of media con- tent must have the active participation of consumers.
The author describes creative engagement as a way to“document conflicting perspectives on media change rather than to critique them. I don’t think we can meaningfully critique convergence until it is more fully understood; yet if the public doesn’t get some insights into the discussions that are taking place, they will have little to no input into decisions that will dramatically change their relationship to media.” Essentially he is saying that creative engagement allows people to analyze the subject at hand and enables them to think critically of the subject, further broadening their understandings. By having a clearer understanding of topics, individuals are more capable of effectively participate in convergence.

I think you defined convergence very well. I missed the lecture on this, but you helped me make this topic clear! I do believe that you have to have a better understanding of topics so people can participate and communicate better. Also with creative engagement, you explained that well too. When you get involved, you have a better understanding as well because you are participating. Great post Sara!
ReplyDeleteI agree with your definition of convergence. I also found that the author connected convergence with active participation. In order to have creative engagement you need people to analyze the subject at hand like you stated. I liked that you said how individuals will be more capable of effectively participating in convergence. Because how are people able to participate if they do not know what is going on.
ReplyDeleteI like how you coordinated active participation and convergence, just like the author did. In order for creative engagement to be effective, a bit of convergence is necessary. And similarly, for convergence to be effective, I think that creative engagement must be successful. I like the connections that you drew between the two terms!
ReplyDeleteI like how you mentioned that today's media has to have active participation by its users. No matter how good a business or website may be, if nobody is engaging in it or purchasing the products, then it's useless. This is a good example of why MySpace, and now Facebook are beginning to fall off and the emergence of Instagram and Twitter have taken center stage.
